Summary

Over the course of nine novels, Tom Clancy’s “genius for big, compelling plots” and his “natural narrative gift” (The New York Times Magazine) have mesmerized hundreds of millions of readers and established him as one of the preeminent storytellers of our time。 Rainbow Six, however, goes beyond anything he has done before。

At its heart is John Clark, the ex-Navy SEAL of Without Remorse, well known from several of Clancy's novels as a master of secret operational missions。 Whether hunting warlords in Japan, druglords in Colombia, or nuclear terrorists in the United States, Clark is efficient and deadly, but even he has ghosts in his past, demons that must be exorcised。 And nothing is more demonic than the peril he must face in Rainbow Six

Newly named the head of an international task force dedicated to combating terrorism, Clark is looking forward to getting his teeth into a new mission, but the opportunities start coming thicker and faster than anyone could have expected: an incident at a Swiss bank, the kidnapping of an international trader in Germany, a terrible raid on an amusement park in Spain。

Each episode seems separate, discrete, yet the timing disturbs Clark。 Is there a connection? Is he being tested? With the help of his close associates, executive officer Alistair Stanley and strike team leaders Domingo Chavez and Peter Covington, Clark tries to figure out where all this activity is heading, but there is no way to predict the real threat: a group of terrorists like none the world has ever encountered, a band of men and women so extreme that their success could literally mean the end of life on Earth as we know it。

Rainbow 6 is a book about a man named John assembling a team of elite men to destroy terrorist cells。 I would recommend this to any action readers

This was my first Tom Clancy techno-thriller and I have to say it was an enjoyable read。 The setting and some of the events in this book are somewhat far-fetched, but hey this is not real life。 A Counter-terrorist unit lead by Americans operating in European soil。 Well let that sync in。。。 I am avoiding spoilers here。 It started with a very interesting concept but for me it just side railed along the way。 There is no character build up as you would expect when it comes to the two main protagonist This was my first Tom Clancy techno-thriller and I have to say it was an enjoyable read。 The setting and some of the events in this book are somewhat far-fetched, but hey this is not real life。 A Counter-terrorist unit lead by Americans operating in European soil。 Well let that sync in。。。 I am avoiding spoilers here。 It started with a very interesting concept but for me it just side railed along the way。 There is no character build up as you would expect when it comes to the two main protagonists or anyone else for that matter。 It leaves things less engaging to read if you are not committed to the story or characters。 Also a major complaint for me is that you could probably wrap this up in 500 pages, why the extra 400?But hey it was a fun read。 Tom Clancy brought an interesting concept in, but took the easy way out with the finale。 Instead of concluding the story he just dismissed it entirely in favor of a cheap ending。。。 。。。more

Field operatives from various countries get together to form a response team。Although it added realism and showed what the team does, sometimes the meticulous detail got tedious。 Plus, there was too much buildup, although the threat of a designed bioweapon virus was very interesting。Moral: People who want to "save" the world or "improve" humans have their own dictatorial ideas and justifications。[Iowa mention] Field operatives from various countries get together to form a response team。Although it added realism and showed what the team does, sometimes the meticulous detail got tedious。 Plus, there was too much buildup, although the threat of a designed bioweapon virus was very interesting。Moral: People who want to "save" the world or "improve" humans have their own dictatorial ideas and justifications。[Iowa mention] 。。。more

Starts off good not great—then catches fire halfway though。 Extremely satisfying。 Even if it is longer than Anna Karenina。

This was WAY too long, as most everyone agrees。 Personally, I could do without him describing all the different gun models, plane models, etc。 (Yawn。) The other thing I could do without are the ways his characters talk about women。 What a chauvinist。 But hey, I know: Clancy writes for men and could give a rat’s __ about what women think。 First written in 1998, the passage of time shows in small ways, especially phone technology: Clancy makes a big deal of a baddie carrying a “cellular” phone。 In This was WAY too long, as most everyone agrees。 Personally, I could do without him describing all the different gun models, plane models, etc。 (Yawn。) The other thing I could do without are the ways his characters talk about women。 What a chauvinist。 But hey, I know: Clancy writes for men and could give a rat’s __ about what women think。 First written in 1998, the passage of time shows in small ways, especially phone technology: Clancy makes a big deal of a baddie carrying a “cellular” phone。 In other ways, the book is still topical, particularly with regard to the last crisis: Ebola。 This book is definitely not for the squeamish。 Every other page it seems there is a head shot, resulting in blood spray, or “mist”。 Ugh。Why do I read Clancy? Because he does tell a good story。 Just too long。 He could have made the last crisis into a separate book。 。。。more

Starts off pretty unremarkable and found myself questioning if I want to continue down the TC rabbit hole。 It also had me questioning why all of the hype and hoopla over Rainbow Six, with its successful videogame fanbase and popularity。 I stuck it out and around the 50% mark, the book starts to get really good and continues to climb all the way through the end。 It's hard to get into detail without dropping spoilers, but the main plot is super fun and almost reads like science fiction。 Very, very Starts off pretty unremarkable and found myself questioning if I want to continue down the TC rabbit hole。 It also had me questioning why all of the hype and hoopla over Rainbow Six, with its successful videogame fanbase and popularity。 I stuck it out and around the 50% mark, the book starts to get really good and continues to climb all the way through the end。 It's hard to get into detail without dropping spoilers, but the main plot is super fun and almost reads like science fiction。 Very, very relevant to COVID-19 and modern day questions about vaccinations。。。 I will just stop right there and leave it at that。 I would NOT recommend this book as an entry point for Tom Clancy novels。 If you've played the Rainbow Six video games, which I have not but hear that are quite good and do have a large following, I say again do not start your TC journey here。 If you're like me and have trogged through the TC uphill battle of the very long and numerous Jack Ryan/John Clark universe。。。 at this point you either love this kind of stuff or you are like me and its a break from your normal reading routine, and it is familiar territory because you're prior service and can relate to a lot of training, decision making, and just the overall material as a whole。 Starts off as a 1-2, finishes as as strong 4 (for a TC novel)。。。 so being fair, I will meet in a middle with a 3。 。。。more

Sure, Tom Clancy takes a lot of words to tell a tale (this is a 897-page book), but trust me when I say this - you will enjoy the ride, long as it may be。 The story covers several events that the counterterror group has to take care; these are building up to the ending event, and what an ending! If you’ve already read anything by Clancy, then you will surely enjoy this book。

4。5/5 - Excellent action, characters, and plot。 Would make a fantastic mini series。 The only area this book falls flat for me is in the protagonists’ motive and even that is still decently executed。

To many plotsThis is a good book if you can get through the story building。 It’s good to know a background, but some of this goes to far into thoughts of the people involved。 Had to skim through a lot of this。

Too dreamy and ridiculous for the world we live in。I read Without Remorse, Cardinal of the Kremlin, and Debt of Honor in highschool。 I played Red October on the commodore 64, and Tom Clancy Wildlands and Rainbow 6 Siege on PS4。 I watched all the Clancy movies including the recent rendition of Without Remorse, and the Jack Ryan TV series (which I think is the best modern offer - and in some ways predicted Venezuela interfering in the US election [sorry, that did really happen])。 The book starts o Too dreamy and ridiculous for the world we live in。I read Without Remorse, Cardinal of the Kremlin, and Debt of Honor in highschool。 I played Red October on the commodore 64, and Tom Clancy Wildlands and Rainbow 6 Siege on PS4。 I watched all the Clancy movies including the recent rendition of Without Remorse, and the Jack Ryan TV series (which I think is the best modern offer - and in some ways predicted Venezuela interfering in the US election [sorry, that did really happen])。 The book starts off very slow with a ton of character building, of which many of the characters are never touched on again or fully fleshed out。 The style and snide comments about the US "winning" the cold war are bizarre, thoughtless, and in 2020 when we've witnessed the same political tactics that the Kremlin used throughout the 60s-80s it's clear to any sane person that the nature of the cold war was transformed into more subversive political machinations (1619, Critical Race, etc)。 We have 100% proof of Russians claiming to be planning to sow racial tensions in the US in 2019 etc etc etcThe 100% stainless esprit de corp and virtue of the protagonists doesn't remind me of reading other Clancy novels。 Again, this comes across as a post Berlin wall braggart story, not a story to ready people for the political realities of subversion, betrayal, infidelity etcSo, the tempo and loose ends would be forgivable if it weren't for the thematic issues。 The core plot is very interesting given the political events of 2020 but the theme and style completely missed the mark - was Tom so naive to really believe that the Russians would stop paying for agent provocateurs (see the film KGB connection for an understanding) because the wall fell???The recent film rewriting of Without Remorse was forced into similar thematic absurdity。 (spoiler) It also downplayed the Russians political power and contrived a completely absurd plot when we live in a reality that's far more sinister and straightforward。 We live in a world where China now owns the US's largest movie theaters (and can force actors to humiliatingly apologize for calling democracies free countries, where CEOs of american brands say things like "nike is of china and for china"), where a 2 term president who's wife was secretary of state for 2 later terms received cash brief cases from China and cash payouts for speaking in Russia after green lighting them buying our uranium (and then accused everyone else on both sides of colluding with Russia), where the sitting president's son has billion dollar assets in China and Ukraine (and our gas line was shut down while he approved a Russian line that would increase profits in his sons aforementioned holdings) 。。。 reality is stranger than fiction。It's hard to imagine that *anyone* in the FBI or CIA isn't a Russian/Chinese asset or under someone that can't speak out against the corruption at this point 。。。 and that's just 20 years after the "hoorah, we won the war" novel。 If this book belies the attitude in intelligence circles in the early 2000s then it's no wonder so many high level assets were turned - blinded by pride and foolishness。 。。。more

I really really enjoyed this book。 It was my first time reading Tom Clancy so I wasn’t too deterred by the 740 pages。 I heard going in that it could probably be a couple hundred pages shorter, and while I do agree, I am glad to have experienced it all。 I couldn’t put the book down for the last 150 pages and am thoroughly satisfied with the story and it’s conclusion。

I loved the story as it went over military occupations in the more covert side of that world。 Following John Clark, Domingo Chavez, and even Dmitry Popov in their separate objectives clashing with one another was compelling。 As everything rounded up with the intentions of a cultist terrorist group using all of them in their schemes, I found the story compelling how things would play out to their goals。 The military jargon and specs to each weapon, vehicle, and tool felt vivid to what a black ops I loved the story as it went over military occupations in the more covert side of that world。 Following John Clark, Domingo Chavez, and even Dmitry Popov in their separate objectives clashing with one another was compelling。 As everything rounded up with the intentions of a cultist terrorist group using all of them in their schemes, I found the story compelling how things would play out to their goals。 The military jargon and specs to each weapon, vehicle, and tool felt vivid to what a black ops soldier unit might be like。 I recommend this story for anyone into military stories。 。。。more

Tremendous let down。 The book is well constructed and has realistic, engaging periods of military fiction。But Clancy cannot stop himself from inserting his politics to the book, and it is completely out of rhythm for the characters to act as they do in order for Clancy to get his own point across。 He sacrifices what could be a great narrative to try and make a personal, political point。I don't care what your politics are, or if your story is a vehicle for your policy preferences。 If that is your Tremendous let down。 The book is well constructed and has realistic, engaging periods of military fiction。But Clancy cannot stop himself from inserting his politics to the book, and it is completely out of rhythm for the characters to act as they do in order for Clancy to get his own point across。 He sacrifices what could be a great narrative to try and make a personal, political point。I don't care what your politics are, or if your story is a vehicle for your policy preferences。 If that is your goal, it is fine by me!
